Dentist escapes ban after securing professional indemnity cover
A dentist in Bridgwater, Somerset has narrowly escaped being banned from practising after he failed to obtain professional indemnity insurance.
The General Dental Council (GDC) heard that Mr Carmichael of Lion House Dentistry had provided dental services for around 20 months without adequate professional indemnity insurance. Hannah Siddall, Communications officer for the GDC said that although dentists are not legally required to have indemnity insurance, it is a requirement by the GDC.
She added that the Government hoped to have a section 60 order in place by May 2015 that will introduce a requirement for all practising healthcare professionals to have appropriate indemnity insurance as a condition of professional registration.
